  • Winter Park City Commission Update - 4.15.21

The Winter Park City Commission yesterday unanimously re-elected Commissioner Carolyn Cooper to be Winter Park’s Vice-Mayor. Her fellow Commissioners and Mayor Phil Anderson spoke highly of her record of service. She will serve a second consecutive year in this position, which is also the final year of her service on the City Commission.

Mayor Anderson and Commissioners are meeting regularly to share their individual priorities with each other and build consensus prior to strategic planning. They have focused on a variety of needs and available funding. Priorities range from humanitarian solutions to assist Winter Park’s homeless and unemployed to exploring the preservation of our city’s village charm.

The Commission continues to meet regularly for Public Work Sessions to discuss plans for an Orange Avenue Overlay district (OAO), and today will discuss zoning parameters.

    Other Commission Meeting Highlights
Parking for Library & Events Center (LEC), MLK Jr. Park and adjoining ball fields:
    • While the City has talked periodically about building a parking garage, until a clearer understanding on need is established, they will rely on current options.
    • The City has partnered with Orlando Health to create a shared parking agreement, allowing public use of 25 spaces at their facility located at the corner of Fairbanks Avenue and Harper Avenue when unused after regular business hours. Signage indicating that option will be posted soon.
    • To supplement these and existing City facility parking spaces, other options are available:
      • Public parking spaces in the parking garage located immediately west of the Orlando Health building.
      • Public spaces on Harper Avenue located on the west side of the LEC and MLK Park ballfields.
    • The City has also entered a shared-parking agreement with adjacent businesses on Morse Boulevard. To use spaces there after regular business hours, City staff offered a plan to install a lighted, mid-block, staggered crossing lane for LEC patrons and all area pedestrians to safely cross Morse Boulevard west of Denning.
Meetings will move from the Winter Park Community Center back to City Hall beginning June 1, barring a steep rise in COVID-19 health concerns.

Except for the Golf Course Advisory Board, all City advisory boards were renewed. Changes to existing boards will be discussed further in future meetings. The Mayor will appoint three new members to most boards at the Commission’s next meeting, April 28.
