This section of the website is reserved ONLY for Winter Park Chamber Members. Any member in good standing may submit information on an event that they are hosting, presenting or sponsoring. The event will be included in chronological order until it is completed and then it will be removed. It will also be included in the next edition of What's Up Wednesday, time permitting. JFS will host School Matters, a school supply drive, through July 31, to benefit the many families who cannot afford the ever-growing list of supplies required for elementary and middle-school aged students. A suggested list of needed school items includes: wide-ruled paper, pencils, pens, glue sticks, note cards, binders, scissors, highlighters and erasers. Financial donations are also accepted to purchase necessary items. To help, drop off school supplies at one of JFS' locations: 2100 Lee Road, Winter Park, 32789 or 11184 S. Apopka Vineland Rd. in Orlando. Checks can be mailed to the JFS Winter Park office (please note "School Matters" on the check) or credit card authorization can be given over the telephone at (407) 644-7593.
The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs's season is in full swing. Check out their full schedule with home games held throughout the summer at the Rollins College baseball stadium. Tickets are just $5 and kids six years of age and under are FREE. Check out their complete summer schedule here.
The Orange County Regional History Center presents Orlando Landmarks: Photo Transfers by Barbara Ery, now through September 12, 2010. Tour Orlando through the lens of Central Florida fine art photographer Barbara Ery. This collection of 30 photo transfers highlights landmark buildings and signs such as the Mt. Vernon Hotel, The Plaza Theatre, the Kress Building, the Johnson's Diner sign, the McNamara Pontiac sign, the Merita Bread sign, and more. Visit www.thehistorycenter.org for additional information.
The Hannibal Square Heritage Center is showcasing for the first time the 125 archival pieces that comprise the award-winning Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park. The exhibition is narrated with oral histories from the lips of people who have experienced them, including everything from daily life and rites of passage to special neighborhood landmarks. The collection will be on display through September 25.
The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens announces that an exhibit of 24 paintings, created during the annual Winter Park Paint Out, are currently on display at the Winter Park Welcome Center. The paintings were produced during the museum's annual event when artists painted outdoors (en plein air) at various Winter Park locations creating unique works of art depicting different aspects of our beautiful city. The paintings at the Welcome Center are available for purchase and all proceeds will directly benefit the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens. Local favorite and veteran actor Michael Edwards will bring American author and humorist Mark Twain to life in his original, one-man show Man Is the Only Animal Who Blushes... Or Needs To! Free Community Weekend presented by Orlando Health at the Orange County Regional History Center, Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1. Admission to the History Center is free all weekend, and on Saturday, July 31, from noon - 2 p.m., the MIX 105.1 Safety Safari, presented by Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and MetroPCS, offers free bike helmets and activities while supplies last, plus educational materials and free bike helmet fittings to help you stay safe this summer!
Green Gardening in Winter Park will be held Saturday, July 31, from 9 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. at the Winter Park Welcome Center. Take a green approach to your lawn and garden with advice from the Orange County Extension Office's Florida Friendly Landscape program, including a rain barrel workshop, and a Florida Smart Plants seminar. Programs are free and lunch will be provided for those attending both morning and afternoon sessions. Rain barrel costs are $80. Barnie's Coffee & Tea Company has partnered with Page15 for the second consecutive year to host a book drive. During the month of August, Barnie's will give patrons a free cup of coffee in exchange for the donation of a new or gently used children's book. Participating locations include: Park Avenue, Baldwin Park, Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park, Altamonte Mall and Phillips Crossing.
Join the City of Winter Park Police Dept. for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 3 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Facility. Gather crime prevention tips presented by local businesses, shred personal documents in the on-site shred vehicle and learn what you can do to stand up against crime from the Winter Park Police and Fire-Rescue Depts.
The Fredlund Gallery hosts a reception on the 1st Wednesday of each month. On August 4, from 6 -9 p.m. The Gallery will be featuring Henry Peter, a self-taught Florida artist. Although Henry paints primarily Florida, he is collected all over the country.
Crealdé School of Art will be presenting an exhibition at the Alice and William Jenkins Gallery, entitled Lyrical Harmonies: Landscape Paintings by Stephen Bach, Larry Moore and Don Sondag. The exhibition will be open from August 6 to October 2, and the opening reception will be held on Friday, August 6, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
The incomparable Ms. Jacqueline Jones, with pianist Michael Kramer, will be showcasing her outstanding jazz vocal style in her cabaret, Hello Darlings, as part of the popular Winter Park Playhouse Spotlight Cabaret Series on Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7. Tickets are $15 and include a drink from the bar. Seating is limited to 50, so advance reservations are strongly recommended. The International Association of Administrative Professionals--Winter Park Chapter is pleased to host Sherri A. Morgan, an executive resume writer and behavioral interview coach, as the guest speaker for their meeting on Tuesday, August 10 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Magnuson Grand Hotel. Come learn what she says recruiters are looking for and what will help your resume stand out from others. The meeting is free and begins at 6 p.m.; charge for optional dinner is $16. Join Freedom Ride on Sunday, August 15 for an evening of enchantment and adventure at Arabian Nights for the organization's 10th annual fundraiser.
